to the big three money headlines, stock surge, overdrive and superspenders, joining me is morgan brennan. let's talk about stocks surged yesterday. how much did they surge? will it continue? >> hopefully. analysts expect we'll see history repeat itself. some double-digit percentage increases this year. month of january, a very strong start. the dow up 6% and that is the best monthly gain that we've seen since 1994. s & p 500 up 5%, best monthly gain since 1997. nasdaq 4%. fingers crossed, may not have a long winter. hopefully a good stock market too. >> what about car sales? >> this goes back to the stock market. people are feeling pretty bullish about buying new vehicles, this month we saw in january i should say, 14% increase in vehicle sales, about a million cars were sold. i think the really interesting story here is actually we're seeing a big increase in pickup truck demand, very closely tied to construction. as we see more homes get beuilt we'll see more puickup trucks sold. >> what about the super bowl? will it bring in big money? >> about $12 million. national retail federation expec

america's secret drone war will be in the spotlight today, when john brennan, president obama's pick to be cia director, testifies at his senate confirmation hearing. to smooth his path, the white house agreed overnight to give lawmakers a secret legal memo that lays out the rules for using drones. jon karl joins us with some of that. this is something the white house resisted for some time. >> reporter: as of yesterday afternoon, the white house actually refused to even acknowledge that this memo existed. but late last night, the president made the call to release the memo on a classified basis to the intelligence committee. this is after one prominent democratic senator threatened or suggested he would filibuster brennan's nomination if they didn't get the documents. this is an indication that at today's hearing, you'll hear some tough questioning about the drone campaign. and i believe the most thorough discussion we have ever seen about this highly secretive but absolutely essential component of the president's war on terror. >> it's coming at a time when yesterday the iranians r

: john brennan will be on capitol hill tomorrow for his confirmation leading to head up the cia. what might lawmakers be asking him about the drone program? guest: i think you'll see some lawmakers. i don't think people will see a huge barrage of questions on this issue. up until now the interest in congress has been limited, but now we're seeing the media episcopal little more. you will see questions about this issue of what the legal safeguards are for u.s. citizens, how much? is required, a dozen u.s. citizen have to know the government is trying to get stomped -- how much proof is required, does the u.s. citizen have to know the government is trying to get them? it is 98% focused on foreign nationals believed to be allied with terrorist groups and not focused on u.s. citizens. there's a growing concern that the drone program in pakistan and yemen may be counteroffensive in the long term because of the backlash it produces in the local populace there and because of anti- american sentiment that it fuels. for the long term, that is probably a bigger question than these unusual circu
